Our Whole Lives (OWL) Sexuality Education

Our Whole Lives is a series of sexuality education curricula developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ. The content is secular and free of specific religious doctrine or reference. However, the underlying values of the program reflect the justice oriented traditions of both denominations.

Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives provides not only facts about anatomy and human development, but helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality.

The courses are directed at five age groups:

Grades K-1

Supports parents in educating children about birth, babies, bodies and families. Following a Parent Meeting and Parent/Child Orientation, the 8 sessions engage children with stories, songs and activities and include a weekly HomeLink, a homework project for parents and children to do together. Promotes dialogue between parent and child.

Grades 4-6

Discusses the physical and emotional changes of puberty and examine topics such as values and sexuality, communication and decision making. Each session includes a HomeLink - a homework activity for parents and children to complete together

Grades 7-9

Examines many topics including values, personal concerns, sexual decisions, sexual language, anatomy, gender and diversity, relationships, sexual behaviors, pregnancy, contraception, STD prevention, and Abuse. Includes a Parent Orientation.

Grades 10-12

Using a comprehensive approach, this program helps senior high youth gain the knowledge, life principles and skills they need to express their sexuality in life-enhancing ways. Includes a Parent Orientation.

Young Adults

Young Adult sessions help participants navigate young adulthood with accurate information, increased self-knowledge, enhanced safety and strengthened interpersonal skills. Other adult workshops use values, communication skills and spirituality as starting points, to explore sexuality issues for adults of all ages. Builds understanding of healthy sexual relationships, affirms diversity and helps participants accept and affirm their own sexuality throughout their lives.
