Our Whole Lives (OWL) Sexuality Education
Our Whole Lives is a series of sexuality and relationship education curricula developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ. The content is secular and free of specific religious doctrine or reference. However, the underlying values of the program reflect the justice-oriented traditions of both denominations. There are supplemental materials utilized by trained facilitators to add faith perspectives to the base materials.
Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. One of the underlying beliefs is that parents are the main sexuality educators; the class exists to help facilitate that. The program equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives provides not only facts about anatomy and human development, but helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality.
The courses are directed at five age groups:
Supports parents in educating children about birth, babies, bodies and families. Following a Parent Meeting and Parent/Child Orientation, the 8 sessions engage children with stories, songs and activities and include a weekly HomeLink, a homework project for parents and children to do together. Promotes dialogue between parent and child.
Discusses the physical and emotional changes of puberty and examines topics such as values and sexuality, communication and decision making. Each session includes a HomeLink – a homework activity for parents and children to complete together. Includes a Parent Orientation.
Examines many topics including values, personal concerns, sexual decisions, sexual language, anatomy, gender and diversity, relationships, sexual behaviors, pregnancy, contraception, STD prevention, and Abuse. Includes a Parent Orientation.
Using a comprehensive approach, this program helps senior high youth gain the knowledge, life principles and skills they need to express their sexuality in life-enhancing ways. Includes a Parent Orientation.
